Nestled in the South Pacific, colonies of coral grow in mesmerizing rings around islands, forming reefs and lagoons known as atolls. These captivating encircling structures and the vibrant hues of ocean currents and living coral reefs have inspired the Atoll collection. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, with its own distinctive pattern of hand-applied color.
The Atoll line of bowls, designed by Kosta Boda's Anna Ehrner, captures the essence of glass at the moment it appears to be both liquid and solid. Oceanic in its inspiration, the Atoll votive bowl features a smooth, flowing profile and incredibly elegant overlapping veils of color within. Its silhouette is substantial yet diminutive, and the shallow well at its center is perfect for resting votive candles. Thanks to its heft and aesthetic substance, the bowl also makes a beautiful display piece even when empty.
Handcrafted by master glassmakers in Kosta Boda's Swedish glassworks, each Atoll votive bowl is subtly distinctive, owing to the natural variations inherent in the creative process. The series comes in a wide array of gorgeous colors, and each piece measures approximately 4-3/8 inches in diameter. Both functional and decorative, the bowl is completely lead-free and should be washed by hand for best results.
"Our life blood," says designer Anna Ehrner, "is the creative process that takes place in the blowing room." Born in 1948, Ehrner has been retained by Kosta Boda since 1974 and maintains a studio at the Kosta glassworks. Experimental in style, her work is distinguished by simple yet powerful shapes and an ability to achieve shimmering displays through the subtle use of color. For Ehrner, the ultimate goal is often a synthesis between practical utility and elegant design, even if the final piece may take years to realize.
Ehrner draws inspiration from nature, including the lagoons of the Pacific and the Northern lights, and her art glass frequently features veils of color within the crystal. She is the originator of sales successes such as the Line glasses and the Atoll series of bowls.
With its characteristic craftsmanship and exceptional design, Kosta Boda has become one of the leading glasshouses in the world. The company's three glassworks in Kosta, Boda, and Ã…fors each have their own unique stories, yet they stand united under the common brand name Kosta Boda. The designers currently on retainer at Kosta Boda work with both utilitarian and art glass, collaborating closely with the skilled craftspeople to bring their creative visions to life.
The history of Kosta Boda is deeply rooted in Swedish cultural heritage. The parent glassworks in Kosta was founded in 1742 by two former generals, Anders Koskull and Georg Bogislaus Stael von Holstein, upon the instructions of King Fredrik I. Over the centuries, Kosta has not only produced utility glass for buildings and royal households but has also embraced the contributions of designers and artists, evolving into an art industry where creative expression and craftsmanship coexist.
Today, Kosta Boda is one of Sweden's strongest brands and a leading global glass company, with approximately 50% of its production sold outside Scandinavia, in markets such as the U.S., Japan, Germany, and Australia. The enduring legacy of the glassworks in Kosta, Boda, and Ã…fors is a source of pride for all Swedes, a testament to the living tradition of craftsmanship that continues to shape the brand's distinctive offerings.
